Vincent Van Gogh spent the last few months of his life at Auvers and it was during this time that Houses at Auvers was painted. He killed himself with a gun in 1891, but not before painting seventy paintings in the last seventy days of his life. In fact, Van Gogh painted almost the entire body of his work, for which we know him today, in three short years - between 1888 and 1891. Note the mellow colors of this painting, brightened only by the few dabs of red in the lower right corner. Van Gogh’s later works are all characterized by a distinctive dashed brushstroke, and Houses at Auvers is no exception. Note also the strong lines, especially the outlines of the houses and the stone wall.
