Jacques Lemoyne de Morgues was a botanist in the 16th
Century. Many of his paintings were destroyed in the Spanish attack on Fort
Caroline, however some of them have
been preserved. It can easily be seen that he was a botanist based on the
accuracy of his painting of the Dog
Roses. The minute detail with which he illustrates the beauty of flowers is
truly amazing. The attention to the stem, thorns, leaves, etc. is very precise
and the delicacy he uses to illustrate the color and construction of the
flowers is perfect. Even the butterfly, which is not a flower, is wonderfully
executed. He was accurate and tasteful in his representation of the flowers he
studied and even though there are few of his paintings and sketches left, those
few are wonderful to study.
