Poynter ~ The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, 1890

Sir Edward Poynter was an artist at the turn of the 19th century and became very famous for his works. His artistic style was influenced by a contemporary painter Frederic Leighton, who painted with a more classical style, yet with a magnificent manner. However, Poynter was influenced the most by Italian art especially Michaelangelo, whom he admired above all other artists. The impression of these two artistic influences upon Poynter is reflected in Poynter’s art which is very classical in style and yet grandiose in manner.

The Queen of Sheba, wearing costly gems, is the central figure walking up the gold infused carpet toward Solomon to verify that he is the wisest of all men. The whole spectacle is emphasizing the greatness of Solomon through his wisdom which brings all other glories and riches:

And the Lord said to Solomon: Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life or riches, nor the lives of thy enemies, but hast asked for thyself wisdom to discern judgment, Behold I have done for thee according to thy words, and have given thee a wise and understanding heart, insomuch that there hath been no one like thee before thee, nor shall arise after thee. Yea and the things also which thou didst not ask, I have given thee: to wit riches and glory, as that no one hath been like thee among the kings in all days heretofore.” 3 Kings 3:11-13
