While El Greco’s romantic paintings smack of early Impressionism,
his style is so individual that he has been described as belonging to no
particular school of art.
Christ, about
to be stripped of His outlandish but dramatic red garment takes up the most
space in this scene. He is the calm amidst the colorful but darker chaos around
Him. The three Marys stand in the left foreground as their Lord is bound and
crucified.
