El Greco ~ The Disrobing of Christ

While El Greco’s romantic paintings smack of early Impressionism, his style is so individual that he has been described as belonging to no particular school of art.

  Christ, about to be stripped of His outlandish but dramatic red garment takes up the most space in this scene. He is the calm amidst the colorful but darker chaos around Him. The three Marys stand in the left foreground as their Lord is bound and crucified.

Mother Mary, pierce me through;
in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified.
