This mosaic is one of many in the Basilica of Sant’
Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy. This
basilica was first an Arian church, built for Theodoric the Great, but in 561
AD was taken over by the Catholic Church, mosaics and all. This mosaic depicts Christ enthroned, with
His hand raised in blessing, surrounded by angels.
“And the seventh angel sounded the trumpet: and there
were great voices in heaven, saying: The kingdom of this world is become our
Lord's and his Christ's, and he shall reign for ever and ever. Amen.”
Apocalypse 11:15
