Mexican
culture and history dominated Rivera’s work. Here a young flower vendor kneels clad
in colorful and simple peasant dress, the double braids in her hair indicating
that she is young and not yet married. Her arms wrap around a bundle of calla
lilies that seems almost too big for her carry. As in many of Rivera’s paintings
depicting flower vendors her face is turned away, rendering her anonymous. A member of the Mexican communist party,
Rivera’s desire for social justice was reflected in his art. The burdened
peasant girl’s anonymity most likely symbolizes the struggles of those in
the working class.
