Altdorfer - Christ on the Mount of Olives

Christ on the Mount of Olives, though a mere sketch, conveys the gravity of its subject well. High above the ground the trees droop, as if heavy with resignation at what is to take place. As the viewer contemplates the scene his gaze drops to the figure of the apostle in the left corner, who slumbers on in deep sleep, having been unable to endure the trying night. His slack profile is turned towards the Master, who alone knows full well what is about to occur. The accusers run towards Him as He kneels with open arms, ready to receive the chalice the Father has prepared for Him. If only the disciple were to wake, one thinks, he would see with his own eyes the horror about to unfold in front of him.

"Could you not watch one hour with me?"

Matthew 26:40
