Christ on the Mount of Olives, though a mere sketch, conveys the gravity of its
subject well. High above the ground the trees droop, as if heavy with
resignation at what is to take place. As the viewer contemplates the scene his
gaze drops to the figure of the apostle in the left corner, who slumbers on in
deep sleep, having been unable to endure the trying night. His slack profile is
turned towards the Master, who alone knows full well what is about to occur. The
accusers run towards Him as He kneels with open arms, ready to receive the
chalice the Father has prepared for Him. If only the disciple were to wake, one
thinks, he would see with his own eyes the horror about to unfold in front of
him.
