De Zurbarán: Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose

Since its restoration in 2008, this painting’s original brilliance has shone more clearly. The calm contrasts between the light and dark parts of the painting, complemented by the fine details in the wicker basket and flowers, create an air of simple peace. Aside from its historical value as de Zurbarán’s only dated and signed still life, its hidden religious meaning sets this piece apart from similar still life paintings. For his original audience of devout Catholics, the three distinct parts recall the Trinity, while the rose and pure water honor Mary, immaculately conceived. Even without knowledge of the artist’s intention, one can still sense the feminine serenity that prevails throughout the scene.

“For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.”
Luke 1:48
